Summers in Maine were a great part of growing up, and one of my Grandmother's favorite things was to take us on the mailboat out to the Cranberry Isles, off of Mt. Desert Island. She'd sit and watch the water and the boats for hours, as my sister and I looked for sand dollars and seaglass and swam in the insanely cold water. I loved the bits of glass worn smooth by years of wear in the ocean.
Now, when I return to Maine with my own kids, I can't quite make myself get in that water, but I do still look for seaglass.
